Distinguished guests, esteemed faculty, innovators, and above all, the leaders and graduates of tomorrow—good morning.

Technology without business strategy remains an unfulfilled concept. Business without technological innovation eventually becomes obsolete. The future belongs entirely to those who can bridge these two worlds.

Yet, there is a third element that is equally critical to our survival and success in this new era: the capacity for continuous self-learning.

As Nepal moves boldly toward an AI-powered digital economy, we need more than programmers, engineers, managers, or entrepreneurs working in isolated silos. We need professionals who can cross boundaries—individuals who understand both code and capital, technology and business, data and human behavior, innovation and ethics.

Most importantly, we need people who understand that education does not end when formal schooling finishes. In an era of rapid technological acceleration, the capacity for self-directed learning may ultimately be the single most valuable skill of all.

Look around this room today. You represent the twin engines of Nepal’s digital future.

On one hand, we have the technologists who understand algorithms, software architectures, data pipelines, and artificial intelligence. On the other, we have the business leaders who understand customers, markets, finance, and strategy.

Together, you drive the machine forward:

  • Technology provides raw possibilities.

  • Business provides direction and scale.

  • Entrepreneurship converts ideas into viable enterprises.

  • Ethics and Security ensure our progress remains worthy of public trust.

But none of these can remain static. Technology evolves, markets shift, and customer expectations adapt daily. Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing the very nature of human work. Therefore, any professional who stops learning risks immediate irrelevance—regardless of how prestigious the degree on their wall may be.

The real competitive advantage is not simply what you know today. It is how quickly you can learn what you need tomorrow.

[Section 2: A Personal Reflection]

When I think about self-directed learning, I am frequently reminded of a pivotal moment from my own student days.

In 1975, while I was studying at IIT Kanpur, my father, Dharma Ratna Yami, came to visit me. We were sitting together in the large lecture hall, L7. Noticing how intently I was listening to the professors, he looked almost irritated. He turned to me and asked:

“Why do you listen to teachers? You are supposed to learn everything on your own.”

[Pause for effect]

His message was not that teachers were unnecessary, but something far deeper: the ultimate responsibility for learning belongs to the learner.

He then reflected on his own extraordinary life, saying: “Look at me. I never went to school. I never even entered Class One in my life. Yet I produced books that became widely read. The effort came from within me.”

My father had no access to the formal education traditionally associated with intellectual achievement. Yet, he developed himself through reading, observation, questioning, reflection, and writing. He was a self-taught thinker. His lesson was simple: A teacher can open the door, but the desire to walk through it must come from within.

[Section 3: Untapped Potential in Rural Nepal]

This lesson is particularly urgent for Nepal today. We often associate opportunity exclusively with Kathmandu—elite schools, universities, laboratories, English-medium education, and digital infrastructure. While a young person in a remote village faces real systemic disadvantages, let us be clear: a lack of opportunity is not a lack of intelligence.

Nepal has a rich tradition of self-made thinkers who emerged despite limited formal resources. Beyond my father, another was Satyamohan Joshi, whose lifelong work demonstrated exceptional curiosity and devotion to Nepal’s heritage. A few months before he passed away, Satyamohan Joshi spoke to me about my father, expressing deep admiration for Dharma Ratna Yami’s intellectual output. His appreciation reinforced an essential truth: Great minds do not always emerge from elite institutions. Sometimes, great minds build themselves.

Rural Nepal should never be viewed through the lens of deficiency; it must be viewed through the lens of untapped potential. What rural communities lack is not ambition or intellect, but access—to quality educators, computers, high-speed connectivity, mentors, and networks.

Technology is changing this equation. A young person in a remote village can now access digital libraries, global courses, programming tools, and AI research. AI can serve as a personalized, 24/7 tutor. But technology alone will not transform Nepal. The young learner must possess the curiosity to ask, "What can I learn?" and the confidence to say, "I will teach myself."

[Section 4: The IIT Kanpur Lesson & T-Shaped Professionals]

The intersection of technology and business is a proven reality. My generation at IIT Kanpur, particularly the Class of 1975, offers a clear demonstration of what happens when technically trained minds refuse to be confined by their original disciplines.

Leaders like Sudhir Vyas, Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Rakesh Gangwal, K. VijayRaghavan, Arvind K. Gupta, and Pawan Goenka proved that an engineering degree is a launchpad, not a limit. By mastering leadership, public policy, management, and entrepreneurship, they embodied what we call the T-shaped professional—combining deep technical expertise with broad cross-disciplinary capability.

Similarly, the journey of my senior, N. R. Narayana Murthy, reinforces this truth. Infosys was not built on software engineering alone. Its success required leadership, customer understanding, organizational design, quality systems, and a global business vision.

Beyond academics, IIT Kanpur built an extraordinarily tight-knit global PAN-IIT family whose lifelong relationships continue to inspire and uplift generations.

For today’s graduates, the takeaway is simple: Let your degree be your starting point, never your boundary.

As we deploy data and artificial intelligence across critical infrastructure, healthcare, banking, and governance, trust becomes our most valuable currency. Security and ethics can no longer be treated as engineering afterthoughts; they are foundational prerequisites.

We must secure both sides of the trust equation:

  1. AI Security (Protecting the System): We must build robust defenses against adversarial prompt injections, data poisoning, and model exploits to safeguard national and organizational infrastructure.

  2. Responsible AI (Guiding the Impact): We must ensure fairness, mitigate algorithmic bias, demand transparency, enforce privacy, and maintain meaningful human oversight in high-stakes decisions.

Data should strengthen human judgment—not replace it. A business or government can deploy state-of-the-art technology, but if public trust dissolves, the entire enterprise fails.

[Section 6: From Technology Consumers to Creators]

For decades, Nepal has been a consumer of imported technology. The next chapter must be fundamentally different. We must begin asking:

  • What can Nepal build?

  • What local problems can we solve using AI?

  • How can we apply technology to our topography, agriculture, healthcare, tourism, and public infrastructure?

Solutions developed for a rural Nepali community can be adapted for developing nations worldwide. A low-cost health device or an AI-driven educational tool designed in Nepal can serve millions globally.

We must build an ecosystem that invests in cross-functional education, universal digital access, practical entrepreneurship, data literacy, and ethical AI frameworks.

When I reflect on my father's advice in lecture hall L7 fifty years ago, I realize he was teaching me intellectual independence—the refusal to wait for someone else to provide every answer.

When I look at my IIT Kanpur peers, I see that same spirit. They became diplomats, scientists, tech founders, corporate leaders, policy champions, and social entrepreneurs. Their unifying trait was not a shared career path, but a shared commitment to learning beyond the classroom.

This is my call to the young generation entering Nepal's workforce today:

  • Learn deeply and continuously.

  • Reach beyond your primary discipline.

  • Master technology, understand business, and stay grounded in human needs.

  • Challenge assumptions, safeguard privacy, protect systems, and build trust.

  • Never allow a degree to define the limits of your imagination.

As my father simply put it:

“The effort should come from within you.”

That is how individuals build legacies. That is how institutions take root. And that is how Nepal will move from being a consumer of technology to a global creator of technology, enterprise, and knowledge.

From rural or urban—Nepal can. Nepal will.

Become Professionals

The professionals who thrive in the coming decade will not necessarily be those who know everything. They will be those who know their own field deeply while understanding enough about neighboring fields to collaborate effectively. An engineer who understands business drivers can build better products. A business leader who understands technology can make smarter investments. A data scientist who understands the customer can generate more useful insights. A programmer who understands ethics can build more responsible AI. An entrepreneur who understands cybersecurity can build a more resilient company. Depth gives expertise, breadth gives you perspective and curiosity connects the two.

Data Must Become Decisions

We are entering an economy where data is one of the most valuable strategic resources. But collecting data is not the same as using it intelligently. The real advantage comes from transforming. Business leaders bring experience, intuition and knowledge of customers and markets. Technologists bring quantitative analysis, algorithms, engineering metrics and predictive models. The strongest decisions emerge when these capabilities are combined. AI can identify patterns that humans may overlook. But humans must still ask: Does this pattern make business sense? Is the data reliable? What assumptions are we making? What are we missing? What could go wrong? Data should strengthen human judgment—not eliminate it.

Security and Ethics Must Come First

There is another element that cannot be treated as an afterthought: trust. As businesses collect more personal information and deploy AI in increasingly important decisions, privacy, cybersecurity, transparency, accountability and fairness become fundamental. Security cannot simply be added after a product is developed. Privacy cannot be considered only after a data breach. Ethics cannot be discussed only after an AI system creates harm. These principles must be built into the development process from the beginning. In an AI-driven world, trust is becoming one of the most valuable forms of capital. A company can have excellent technology and still fail if customers do not trust it. A government can deploy sophisticated digital services and still lose public confidence if citizens fear misuse of their data. A healthcare AI system can be technically impressive and still be unacceptable if it is not transparent, safe and accountable. Technology must therefore be powerful and responsible.

From Technology Users to Technology Creators

Nepal has traditionally consumed a great deal of imported technology. The next stage should be different. We should increasingly ask: What can Nepal build? What problems can Nepal solve with AI? What technologies can be developed for our mountains, villages, agriculture, healthcare, education, tourism and public services? And which of those solutions can eventually serve global markets? A solution developed for a rural Nepali community may ultimately have relevance in another developing country. A low-cost health technology designed for Nepal may have a global market. An AI education platform developed for Nepali students may serve millions beyond Nepal. This is where the intersection of technology and business becomes powerful. Technology creates possibility.
Business creates scale.
Entrepreneurship creates momentum.
Ethics creates trust.
Self-learning creates adaptability.

AI Changes the Meaning of Education

Artificial intelligence makes my father’s message even more relevant today. When I was a student in 1975, access to knowledge was limited. Today, knowledge is everywhere. A student can ask an AI system to explain a difficult concept. They can access university lectures from around the world. They can learn programming online. They can analyse research papers. They can build prototypes. They can communicate with people in different countries. The challenge is no longer simply access to information. The challenge is knowing what questions to ask and how to think about the answers. If students use AI only to obtain answers, they may become dependent on it. If they use AI to explore, challenge, experiment and create, it can amplify their intelligence. The most important skill may therefore become learning how to learn with AI without surrendering your own thinking to AI.

From Rural or Urban—Curiosity Is the Great Equalizer

This is where Nepal’s rural–urban divide can become an opportunity. We should build a Nepal where geography does not determine the ceiling of a person’s ambition. A student in Kathmandu and a student in a remote village should not necessarily have identical circumstances. But both should have the possibility of accessing knowledge. Both should have opportunities to develop skills. Both should be able to connect with mentors. Both should be able to participate in the digital economy. And both should be encouraged to create. The next great Nepali engineer, scientist, entrepreneur, writer or inventor may not currently be studying in an elite institution. Perhaps that person is in a rural school. Perhaps that student has never touched a sophisticated laboratory. Perhaps nobody has yet recognized their potential. But if that young person has curiosity, determination and access to learning, their future can be very different.

What Nepal Should Build

If we truly want an AI-powered digital economy, we need to invest not only in infrastructure but in people. We need: Cross-functional education that connects technology, business and society, self-directed learning that encourages curiosity beyond the syllabus and  digital access that reaches rural as well as urban Nepal. We need entrepreneurial education that teaches students how ideas become sustainable enterprises. We need Data literacy that enables people to make evidence-based decisions, cybersecurity awareness that protects individuals, organizations and national infrastructure. We also need ethical AI education that puts human values at the centre of innovation and and above all, we need a culture where people are encouraged to keep learning throughout their lives.

The Legacy We Leave Behind

When I look back at my father’s words in lecture hall L7 in 1975, I realize that he was giving me a lesson that went far beyond education. He was talking about intellectual independence. He was telling me not to wait for someone else to provide every answer. He was telling me to develop the ability to learn, question and create. And when I look at the remarkable careers of my IIT Kanpur generation, I see the same principle expressed in many different ways. Some became diplomats, some became scientists, some became professors, some became technology innovators, some became industrial leaders, entrepreneurs, built companies, some built institutions, some worked for society. Their common characteristic was not that they followed the same career path. It was that they continued learning after leaving the classroom. That is perhaps the greatest lesson for Nepal.

We should not educate young people only to get jobs but educate them to create value, We should not train engineers only to operate existing systems. We should train them to imagine better systems and not teach business students merely to manage existing companies. We should encourage them to create new enterprises and and we should not allow rural children to believe that geography determines their intellectual potential.

Nepal’s Future Is at the Intersection

The future of Nepal will not be built by technology alone nor will it be built by business alone. It will be built where technology meets business, where knowledge meets curiosity, where innovation meets ethics, and where opportunity reaches both rural and urban Nepal.

My father’s life taught me that formal education is valuable, but self-learning is limitless. My IIT Kanpur generation taught me that technical expertise becomes far more powerful when combined with leadership, management, entrepreneurship and social purpose.

The AI revolution is now giving Nepal a new opportunity to bring these lessons together. So to the young people entering Nepal’s workforce today: Learn deeply, learn continuously, learn beyond your discipline. Understand technology and understand, business, understand people.

Use data.

Question assumptions, protect privacy, build trust and and never allow your degree to define the limits of your imagination. Because the future belongs not to those who know everything today. It belongs to those who are willing to keep learning tomorrow and perhaps my father’s most important lesson remains the simplest:

“The effort should come from within you.” That is how individuals create a legacy. That is how institutions are built, societies progress and that is how Nepal can move from being a consumer of technology to becoming a creator of technology, enterprise and knowledge for the world. From rural or urban, the future belongs to those who learn, create and contribute.
